The Royal Anthropological Institute is currently accepting submissions for an online and physical exhibition on “Illustrating Anthropology,” which explores the potential of illustration for anthropological research and dissemination.

If you’re looking for a creative way to engage with your research data during lockdown, or have sketches that express your ethnographic findings or experience, feel free to send them their way!

The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2019. More information about the exhibition, as well as detailed submission instructions can be found below.

All forms of illustration will be considered, including digital and analogue drawings, graphic reportage, comics-style narrative pieces, and photo collages. Entries will be judged by the RAI Public Anthropology Fellows, and by Dr Benjamin Dix, Founding Director of PositiveNegatives who produce comics, animations, and podcasts about social and humanitarian issues.

Entry Rules:

  • No more than 5 JPG, PNG, or PDF files will be considered per applicant.
  • Images should be no bigger than A4 in dimension, saved at 300 DPI.
  • Your entry should be accompanied by 250 words about you and your research.
  •  Please submit entries by email to publicanthropologists@gmail.com by Friday 22 May 2020.
  • Submission emails must include the subject line “Illustrating Anthropology”.

The exhibition is part of the RAI’s new Leach Fellowship in Public Anthropology to engage the public with anthropological research via a series of events, including various festivals, projects, and exhibitions over the coming years.
